General Education Courses
Course # | Name | School | When |
---|---|---|---|
HIST 202 | Introduction To Western Civilization II | ISU | Spring '15 |
This course did not neccesarily impact my career directly, however it did help me grow as a person. Learning history changes the way we see the world and helps us better understand why certain things have happened. | |||
ARCH 321 | History of the American City | ISU | Fall '16 |
Similar to HIST 202. This class a lot more focused on US History and not only the Cities, but also the people, cultures and all things pertaining to what constitues a "city". I don't understand how this class it not something that is taught in High School or somewhere as a requirement for living in the US. It gave me such a deep understanding of why we have the many social issues now and their root causes. | |||
ECON 101 | Principles of Microeconomics | ISU | Srping '16 |
This class did not really impact my career in any way either, and while it was a very interesting class, I did not see much gain in knowledge form taking it. A lot of the topics are mostly common sense. | |||
PSYCH 101 | Introduction to Psychology | ISU | Spring '15 | I really loved this class, it's so fascinating to learn about how we function at the biological level and how it translates to the emotions and things we feel. |
US LS 211 | Introduction to U.S. Latino/a Studies | ISU | Fall '17 | US LS 211 was really open to exploring different topics about Latinos in the US, which I really liked. I was able pick my own topic for the last project, and I chose "Latinos in Engineering". I learned how broad the term 'Latino' and how underepresented latinos are in the STEM fields. I want to make an impact to change that. |
Going Forward
I really want to focus on just growing myself, both professionally and an engineer and as a person. I want to learn as much as I can about technology and keep a flexible mindset to explore new technologies. Ideally, I would to want to work in Mobile Development, which I enjoy a lot. I do love Web Development as well, and it's what I currently do at my internship. I would like to stay here in Iowa and continue to work at TMC.
Importance of General Education
I learned a lot of valuable life skills in my general education courses. I think from an egnineering perspective, in order to understand problems people face and try to solve those problems, we have to understand people. We have to have empathy in order to properly find solutions for problems that exist.
Sometimes in engineering we face problems that are not so straightforward to solve. We need to be able to see past thep roblem, idenfity the trends, and understand what people are trying to communicate to us. In Psychology I learned that people don't explain things clearly, not because they are lying but because how we perceive things many times is different than how we remember it, and what actually happened. When trying to find a solution for a bug per se, we have to be able to decipher what the customer says happened and what they believe happened.
